Every year the GRAMMYs provide audiophiles with a who’s who of all the new music they may have missed. While many nominees seem to find themselves on the ballot year after year, music’s biggest awards show also never fails to introduce us to an annual plethora of newcomers taking their respective scenes by storm. Beyond this year’s nominees for Best New Artist who have quickly become household names, I would like to draw attention to the best newcomers you may have never heard of.

Jazzmeia Horn

With the release of her debut album, A Social Call, the 2015 Thelonious Monk Institute Competition winner burst onto the scene in 2017 with a fresh take on an array of classic jazz standards. Horn showcases her voice and training by navigating through a variety of styles and moods from Betty Carter’s “Tight” to the classic hymn “Wade in the Water”. After listening to her highly anticipated first release, it’s no surprise that the Dallas-born, New York-trained artist is nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Whether or not she takes home the award in an incredibly competitive field, I believe the appropriately named Jazzmeia will be a staple in the category for years to come.

The Baylor Project

Fellow Best Jazz Vocal Album nominees, The Baylor Project, consisting of drummer Marcus Baylor and vocalist Jean Baylor stunned audiences over the past year with their debut album, The Journey. The married jazz veterans at long last collaborated on this ambitious project that combines contemporary jazz with a traditional gospel feel that draws on the couple’s religious roots. The Journey was released on Baylor’s’ own label, Be A Light, and artfully pays homage to legends like Herbie Hancock and George Gershwin in an autobiographical fashion that gives listeners an insight into the duo’s lives and cultural influences. Their single “Laugh and Move On” (seen below) also earned a nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

6lack

6lack (pronounced Black) released his debut album Free 6lack in November 2016 and earned a nomination for Best Rap/Sung Performance at this year’s GRAMMYs with his single PRBLMS. Being acknowledged in the same category as JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar for his first release is an impressive and well-deserved accomplishment for the computer science major turned rapper. The Atlanta native spent years trying to make it in the industry and finally broke through with his down to Earth debut album that chronicles his journey and his newfound liberation from Flo-Rida’s IMG. PRBLMS provides a look into the life of 6lack, known for his reputation of being introverted and creative, as he reflects on the struggles of trying to maintain a relationship while chasing fame and a career in music. PRBLMS helped to put 6lack in an elite class from the get-go, and with his unique style and honest lyrics, his name should only continue to grow.

The twenty-second annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, also known as SAG Awards were held on Saturday January 30, 2016! The guild awards are mainly for honoring the best achievements in film and television in the year of 2015.

Like any large event which includes lot’s of celebrities, there are always a select few red carpets we all end up liking and the rest… well we just wonder what they were thinking.

Here are the top-eight looks we felt were either jaw-dropping or simply elegant!

1. If you’re a sucker for sequins like myself, you’ll love this gown!

Here’s Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton. The actress carried herself onto the red carpet with this chic look and even bagged an award for Outstanding Performance in a supporting role female for The Danish Girl

2. Elegant and poise!

Ariel Winter in her Romono Keveza strapless, backless black gown was breathtakingly beautiful. The 18 year old actress who recently got breast-reduction surgery done, was afraid to rock this gown. After she carried it with full confidence on the carpet, she later conveyed to her Instagram followers,

Embrace all that you are… Scars & everything. Your imperfections make you perfectly you #loveyourself

3. There were a few ladies in blue on the red carpet this year, but this one in particular stood out!

Diane Lane in a Angel Sanchez one-shoulder simple gown. A soft side ponytail and crystal earrings and bracelet only add to her elegant look.

4. Better late than never!

Saoirse Ronan rocked her Micheal Kors gown! The actress seemed a bit flustered when she arrived on-stage, but there’s not doubt she looked gorgeous in this look.

5. One of my favorite TV actresses from the infamous Shonda Rhimes TGIT series, Scandal!

Katie Lowes in her savy-chic Christian Siriano gown is stunning!

6. The Crazy, Stupid, Love cast reunion!

Marisa Tomei from looked divine in this dark-teal Zuhair Murad gown! The intricate bead-work and low-cut neckline only adds to how eye-catching this piece is.

7. This one may be one of my least favorites, but it still works!

Kaley Cuoco in a Romona Kaveza one-shoulder illusion gown rocked it pretty well. What doesn’t work to well with the simple-chic gown is the top-knot. Something about it is not looking right with this look. But still gorgeous!

8. And lastly, another one of my least favorites, but because she’s my favorite I still feel she’s flawless!

Quantico and Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra looks drop-dead-gorgeous as always! She’s wearing a Monique Lhuillier mermaid-style gown with an embroidery detailed design. All eyes were on her during the red carpet entrance and Hollywood cannot get enough of the stunning brown girl on television!  sagawards5
